Every now an again the GLC is lucky enough to be invited to write a review in return for a freebie, and for the right fit we’re always happy to oblige. So when Just Eat the global takeaway phenomenon approached us, we simply couldn’t say no.
With a £50 credit at our disposal and a Friday-night-curry habit, we decided to give it a try. The site is easy enough to navigate, simply add your postcode and cuisine type to display a list of takeaway options. Strangely only one takeaway was displayed for my location (when Google finds a dozen on first click), but then I realised the other takeaways are listed in the navigation by specific cuisine type such as Bangladesh and Nepalese, but these are sandwiched between fish and chip and burgers which is a little odd – surely curry should incorporate all sub-cuisines.
Putting this navigational gripe aside, we selected a take away and proceeded to order, and quickly realised how much harder it is to navigate a menu to order your regular dish vs. picking up the phone. Ordering took some time and we skipped over a couple of options we had queries about just to speed the process up. It was a bit odd to click a button and hope the order has been received but true to form the food turned within the timeframe quoted.
So what about Just Eat? I just fail to see the proposition. There are plenty of aggregators of local takeaways, and I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t just pick up the phone and have a conversation with someone. Food is such a personal aspect of life, it deserves a dialogue, saying that there are clearly a lot of people who disagree with me as according to the FT Just Eat are readying for a London listing in April or May at a valuation in the range of £700m to £900m, big numbers!

I couldn’t agree more. Funnily enough I thought of this very idea 12 years ago and the now wife rubbished it… I suppose the niche here would be that you can pay on card for that dodgy take-away down the road that only deal with cash
A small niche for a dominant company.
