Gordon Ramsay is soon to serve his last meal at Claridge’s after 12 years of service, and will be parting company with the Mayfair hotel after Claridge’s owners failed to agree a new long-term contract.
Ramsey won the Claridge’s contract in 2001 with his father-in-law and former business partner Chris Hutcheson and at the time it was widely viewed as a breakthrough for the young and relatively unknown chef. Although the venture won many admirers in the early days, it’s widely seen as having lost its way in recent years and lost its Michelin star in 2010.
Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s closes June 2013
A spokeswoman for Gordon Ramsay Holdings said: “We have taken the decision to close Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s in June 2013 following a fantastic collaboration over the last 12 years. We’d like to thank all our guests for the amazing support they have given for over a decade but felt the time was right to move on to new opportunities and investments.”
In his autobiography Playing With Fire, Ramsay said “from the moment I heard of the idea, I knew that Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s was going to take us into a different league …Claridge’s from the history books and me from a council estate. Who would ever have thought it?”
Thomas Kochs, general manager at Claridge’s, said: “We thank Gordon and his team for the incredible dedication they have shown in making the restaurant such a success. We feel the time has come, however, for a new dining direction for Claridge’s and we bid farewell to Gordon with best wishes.”
